I designed a game set in a futuristic Japanese gallery using a minimalist style. The player has control of three drones which they can use to open doors, distract guards and help the player steal valuable artifacts.

Project Objective

The focus of this project was to use the environment in different ways, to help the player navigate through the level. This included using props, lighting and colour to help guide them through the level. As well as giving the player places to hide their drones, by having multiple paths and hiding places it allows for replay ability. I placed particular focus on providing a user friendly game with careful use of UI, to keep it simple and stylish. 

Software Used

  • Maya

  • Unreal Engine 4

  • Substance Designer

  • Photoshop

What went well:

  • Tutorial level is easy to follow

  • Player does feel guided by the environment without being forced to go in set directions

  • Mechanics all worked well and could see elements of a fun heist game

  • Player had a sense of risk and reward to go looking for more loot to steal before getting out, which increased the chance that they could be spotted

What would Improve:

  • Due to multiple corruptions was not able to build the second level

  • Ai was not the most reliable

  • Was no downside to leaving the drones

  • Players could leave the first room in the drone and not realise that they have to release the player with the drone

  • As I was trying to guide the player mostly with the environment not great that I have to use text to first tell them about the drones - would need to think of a way of explaining it to them through the level if that was something as simple as a picture on the wall showing a drone on the other side of the door
